Dr. Gideon Barstow

Dr. Gideon Barstow was an early member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, having been admitted in 1808. HE was a member of the convention for revising the Constitution of Massachusetts in 1820, and the two following years a member of Congress from Massachusetts. He was a graduate from Brown University and had practiced medicine in Salem before locating in Hanover. Still later he moved to Brookline, Massachusetts, and died in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1852, where he had gone for his health.

Dr. Gideon Barstow, bom in Hanover, September 7th, 1783, graduated from Brown University in 1801. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Medical Society in 1808. In 1820, he was a member of the Convention for revising the Constitution of Massachusetts, and, in 1821-3, was a member of Congress from Massachusetts. After graduating from the Brown University, he studied under Dr. Kittridge of Salem, where he settled for a time, before coming to Hanover. He removed to Brookline, Massachusetts, where he practiced until 1831, when he retired. He died in 1852 at St. Augustine, Fla., where he went for his health.

Gideon Barstow (1783-1852), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Mattapoisett, Plymouth County, Mass., September 7, 1783; attended the common schools and Brown University, Providence, R.I., 1799-1801; studied medicine; was admitted to practice and settled in Salem, Essex County, Mass.; member of the State constitutional convention in 1820; elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1823); was not a candidate for renomination in 1822; member of the State house of representatives in 1823, 1829, 1833, and 1837; served in the State senate in 1827 and 1834; presidential elector on the Whig ticket of Clay and Sergeant in 1832; because of ill health moved to St. Augustine, St. Johns County, Fla., and engaged in mercantile pursuits; died in St. Augustine, Fla., March 26, 1852; interment in Huguenot Cemetery.
